SA’s top crime detective suspended

Date: Jul 15, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, has confirmed that the country’s Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant-General Shadrack Sibiya, has been placed on leave.

This follows serious allegations linking him to criminal syndicates operating within the SA Police Service (SAPS).

The allegations were raised by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, and also involve well-known tenderpreneur Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who is accused of corrupt dealings within police ranks.

Masemola addressed the media in Durban on Monday afternoon, stating, “I asked him to stay home while we carry out investigations. The investigation will determine what happens next, and it may well conclude there is nothing and he can return.”

The development has intensified scrutiny on organised crime’s influence within SA’s police structures. Authorities have not indicated when the investigation will be completed.
