US considers expanding travel ban to include 25 African countries

Date: Jun 17, 2025

The United States (US) government is considering a major expansion of its travel restrictions, with a leaked State Department memo revealing that citizens from 36 additional countries could soon face entry bans.

Of those, 25 are in Africa, including Nigeria, Egypt, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The proposal comes in the wake of a recent presidential proclamation that restricted entry from 12 nations. It forms part of a broader immigration clampdown under President Donald Trump’s second term in office.

According to the internal communication, signed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the potential expansion is based on concerns over terrorism links, inadequate passport security, and limited co-operation in the repatriation of deportees. The countries identified have been given 60 days to address these issues or risk being subjected to full or partial travel restrictions.

If implemented, the new measures would significantly widen the scope of existing US travel policies, drawing comparisons to the controversial 2017 travel ban, which was criticised for disproportionately targeting African and Muslim-majority countries.

The development has sparked concern among diplomats and civil society groups, who warn that such a move could strain relations with African nations and disrupt economic and social ties.

Officials in the targeted countries are expected to engage with US authorities in the coming weeks in a bid to prevent the imposition of new restrictions.
