“Chieftaincy conflict could be behind killings in northern Ghana”

Date: Sep 22, 2023

Nine people have been killed and several others injured in an ambush by unknown assailants in northern Ghana.

According to Channel Africa correspondent in Ghana Eric Mawuena Egbta, the attack took place in the upper east region town of Pusiga.

“This is believed to be a chieftaincy conflict in the neighbouring Boku township. There is a historical context, this attack is not surprising. There has been a long drawn battle between two ethnic groups in that part of the country, which has resulted in endless ambushes. In fact, the entire township of Boku, for a very long time, has seen very little development because as and when sporadic shootings spring up, with people being killed,” said  Egbta.

The country’s electoral commission has undertaken a limited registration exercise for people who turn 18 and above, and they have not been able to go to that area because of the volatile situation there, said Egbta.

The casualties are believed to be six women and three men, with several others injure.
