SA first brought its case against Israel last December, accusing it of committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The court adopted provisional measures requiring Israel to prevent genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and enable the provision of basic services and humanitarian assistance.
"What we're seeing this year is the kind of escalation that many have feared for a long time. The escalation is not responding to provocation but is part of a planned attack. The forces for peace have been marginalized in Israel; the voices of reason are in the minority right now. What we need to do is end the impunity. We need to end five decades of impunity, where Israel is seen as an exception to international law and accountability. The only option we have as a small country in the southern tip of Africa is to work with other countries to ensure that we create the kind of momentum where this impunity ends. That's why the ICJ case is so important," said Zane Dangor, DIRCO's Director-General.
