The delegation, part of the Global March to Gaza, set off earlier this week as part of renewed efforts to break the blockade and provide humanitarian relief to Palestinians. The mission comes in the wake of an aid boat reportedly seized by Israeli forces, further escalating concerns over restricted access to the enclave.
People Against Gangsterism and Drugs, a well-known SA activist movement, has confirmed that some of its members are among those detained. Speaking on behalf of the group, legal representative Cassiem Parker said they are still trying to establish the reasons behind the detentions and the current conditions of those being held.
The broader campaign involves activists from across the globe who are calling for an end to what they describe as the ongoing siege of Gaza. Organisers say the march is not only about aid but also about showing solidarity with Palestinians and raising awareness of their plight.
So far, Egyptian authorities have not released a formal statement regarding the incident, and it remains unclear whether the delegates will be allowed to continue their journey.
