SA Police Minister assures delegates tight security at BRICS summit

South Africa’s Police Minister, Bheki Cele, has announced that security measures have been put in place to protect the 15th Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) Summit delegates.

The Summit, a high-level meeting of the leaders of the countries begins today in Sandton, Johannesburg.

The Minister also assured protection for residents in the area.

He has deployed law enforcement officers from different departments and private security firms. The Minister has also asked the police to be alert and professional in carrying out their duties.

The summit will cover various topics of global and regional significance, such as trade, security and co-operation.

The summit, which will take place at the Sandton Convention Centre, has resulted in some road closures in Sandton, Johannesburg. West Street, Fifth Street and Alice Lane are inaccessible to traffic.

Members of the public are advised to use alternative routes and avoid congestion.
