This is according to Parliamentary spokesperson Moloto Mothapo, who confirmed that Parliament is expected to adopt the budget before the end of July this year.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana is expected to table a revised budget next month. This follows an out-of-court settlement, made an order of the Western Cape High Court, which suspended the VAT adjustment and set aside the Fiscal Framework resolutions.
A VAT increase of 0.5 percentage points was adopted by Parliament nearly three weeks ago. However, the Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters applied for an interdict against the increase, challenging its constitutionality and the Parliamentary procedure used.
Mothapo says Parliament remains committed to fulfilling its legal obligations despite the setback.
“Going forward, Parliament is engaging the Executive to determine an appropriate date for the tabling of the revised budget. We expect the Minister to table the budgetary instruments within the coming weeks,” said Mothapo.
“Parliament stands ready to act swiftly and responsibly to process and adopt the revised national budget within the timeframes of the law.
