Bodies of SANDF soldiers killed in DRC to be repatriated this week

Date: Feb 9, 2025

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) says the remains of the 14 soldiers who died in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) will be repatriated to the country this week.

The soldiers killed in combat were part of the Southern African Development Community mission in eastern DRC and lost their lives as the M23 rebels captured Goma.

SANDF Spokesperson Siphiwe Dlamini says the bodies will be returned to the country after all procedures have been completed in Uganda.

Dlamini says, “The mortal remains of the SANDF soldiers arrived in Entebbe, Uganda. The standard pathology procedure will commence today. It is anticipated that all necessary procedures will be completed by no later than Tuesday, February 11, 2025. Further updates will be duly communicated.”
