UN raises alarm over escalating DRC conflict as SA Former President weighs in

Date: Mar 29, 2025

The head of the United Nations (UN) Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Bintou Keita, has briefed the Security Council in New York on the escalating violence and displacement in the country.

This follows the M23's takeover of key cities Goma and Bukavu last month.

Keita highlighted a sharp rise in human rights violations, including forced child recruitment, abductions, and cases of forced labour.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s Former President, Thabo Mbeki, has stated that the conflict in the DRC is internal and should be resolved by the Congolese themselves.

“The conflict in the Congo is fundamentally a conflict among the Congolese and derives from the fact that there is a section of the population in eastern Congo which the government in Kinshasa does not want to recognise as Congolese. These are Congolese who speak Kinyarwanda. During Mobutu’s years, Mobutu said these are not Congolese and should be driven back to Rwanda. They even had a militia formed in eastern Congo, such as the Mai-Mai. That is why the M23 was formed.”
