SA police intensifies border security efforts

Date: Dec 25, 2023

Police in South Africa's northern KwaZulu-Natal province have arrested 148 suspects and recovered 170 vehicles in a crackdown on cross-border theft.

The operation, led by National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola and Police Minister Bheki Cele, aims to protect the residents of Manguzi and nearby areas from criminals who target their SUVs and bakkies and smuggle them to Mozambique.

Masemola says the deployment has been successful, but urges the local community to cooperate and work with the police to catch the remaining culprits. He admits that two vehicles were stolen and crossed the border last week, despite the increased police presence.

The operation is part of the police's festive season campaign to ensure safety and security across the country.
