The move, which cites Postbank's compliance issues, limited banking infrastructure, and poor communication, has raised concerns about the well-being of vulnerable recipients.
The suspension has been met with confusion, particularly among beneficiaries in the Northern Cape province. Kimberley-based pensioner Matshidisonyana Seleke voiced her frustration, saying, “I have not changed my card because I am very confused. I don’t know what to do about these SASSA cards. SASSA is making us confused.”
To alleviate concerns, SASSA has confirmed that its old gold cards remain operational until SARB announces a new termination deadline. SASSA’s Northern Cape Spokesperson, Lungelo Mkamba, assured beneficiaries, stating, “Although the issuance of the Postbank black cards has been temporarily halted on instruction from SARB, all SASSA gold cards remain functional until a new deadline is issued. Beneficiaries can continue using their gold cards as usual, and there is no need for immediate panic.”
