Too much learning time lost to food poisoning: SA Basic Education

Date: Oct 27, 2024

The South African Basic Education Department says it is concerned about the learning time that some children have lost after ending up in hospital for suspected food poisoning.

Six children died in Naledi, Soweto after consuming snacks allegedly bought from a foreign-owned spaza shop.

In recent weeks, there have been incidents of food poisoning not only in Gauteng, but Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

In all three provinces, more than 100 learners were treated for symptoms of food poisoning.

The department’s Spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga has urged parents to pay attention to what their children consume.

“We are urging parents, care givers and guardians to ensure that they talk to their children about the things they eat, where they buy it and the safety in particular. They need to try to eat from trusted sources because of the chaos that has been happening as a result of food poisoning incidents that have been reported in many parts of the country.”
