SA’s rights body accused of siding with foreigners amid building raids

Date: Jun 30, 2025

Anti-migrant movement has accused the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) of overlooking the needs of citizens in favour of undocumented foreign nationals.

The accusation follows a series of raids carried out on Saturday at hijacked buildings in Rosettenville, Johannesburg. The group, which has led similar campaigns in the past, confronted police, alleging inaction against illegal occupation by foreign nationals.

Prior to the raids, the SAHRC raised concerns and alerted National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola and the Hawks, citing potential risks.

Speaking during the operation, the group’s leader Zandile Dabula criticised the Commission’s response to issues affecting locals.

“They must come out and tell us who they really represent. Because from where we stand, it looks like they’re only interested when foreign nationals are involved,” said Dabula. “We’ve had children die from poisonous food and others harmed by foreign nationals, but the Commission was nowhere to be seen. Yet, when we act to raise these issues, they threaten us with court action.”

Dabula said their actions would continue, insisting they could not “stand by while the country is in decline.”

While the Human Rights Commission has not responded directly to the weekend remarks, it has consistently emphasised that all individuals in SA, regardless of nationality, are entitled to legal protection under the Constitution.
