The dismissal comes just days after Akponna publicly acknowledged persistent challenges in the supply of water and electricity across the country. In a statement that drew sharp criticism, the former minister accused unnamed individuals of orchestrating a “siphoning of the national budget”.
His remarks have sparked political uproar, with twelve opposition Members of Parliament from the Les Démocrates party tabling a resolution in Parliament. They are demanding the establishment of a parliamentary commission of inquiry to investigate the alleged financial mismanagement within the Ministry.
Political journalist and commentator Aristide Kanoussou said the incident highlights deeper issues of governance and transparency.
“What we are witnessing is not just the fallout of one Minister's statement,” said Kanoussou. “It exposes long-standing concerns over accountability in the management of public resources. This could trigger wider institutional scrutiny if taken seriously by Parliament.”
