Ramaphosa criticises DA for jeopardising Government of National Unity

Date: Jun 27, 2024

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has criticized the Democratic Alliance (DA) for undermining efforts to establish a government of national unity.

In a letter dated June 25, 2024, addressed to DA leader John Steenhuisen, Ramaphosa expressed his frustrations amid an ongoing deadlock between the African National Congress (ANC) and the DA over the Trade and Industry portfolio.

Ramaphosa accused the DA of shifting the "goalposts" during negotiations with the ANC. He noted his surprise at the DA's recent demand for two additional portfolios, which would increase their cabinet positions to eight, despite previously agreeing to withdraw their claim on the Trade and Industry portfolio. According to Ramaphosa, the DA's conduct has been disruptive and uncooperative, contrasting sharply with the behavior of other negotiating parties.

The ANC President emphasized that the ANC cannot comply with the DA's latest demands, as the DA continually alters its interpretation of the Statement of Intent. Ramaphosa is expected to finalize negotiations this week with other political parties that have signed the Statement of Intent.
