Mozambique braces for crime surge following prison riot, escape

Date: Dec 27, 2024

Officials in Mozambique are bracing for a potential surge in crime over the next 48 hours following a massive prison riot and escape in the capital, Maputo.

The incident, which occurred at a maximum-security prison, resulted in the deaths of 33 people and injuries to 15 others. Approximately 1 500 inmates managed to escape during the chaos, with 150 of them recaptured so far.

However, the exact number of escapees remains unclear, as some individuals were mistakenly detained simply because they appeared suspicious.

Many of the prisoners were not wearing uniforms, making it difficult to distinguish them from civilians once they fled. This has complicated efforts to identify and recapture the escapees accurately.

The general commander of police revealed that about 29 of the escaped prisoners were terrorists, highlighting the severity of the situation. With only a fraction of the escapees recovered, the authorities are on high alert for potential criminal activities.

In addition to the Maputo incident, there have been reports of attempted jailbreaks at two other prisons, further exacerbating the security concerns. As the situation unfolds, Mozambique's law enforcement agencies are working tirelessly to restore order and prevent further escalation of violence and crime.
