Somalia to hold first national elections in over 50 years

Date: Jul 4, 2025

Somalia is set to hold its first national elections in more than half a century next year, signalling a key step in the nation’s ongoing journey to rebuild after years of conflict.

The country has endured prolonged instability that severely damaged its economy and forced many Somalis to flee abroad. These elections represent hope for a fresh start and a more stable future.

On July 1, Somalia marked 65 years of independence with celebrations across the country, highlighted by the official opening of its embassy building in Pretoria, South Africa, a move that underscores its commitment to strengthening international relations.
