On this day, December 12, Kenyans reflect on their hard-won freedom, achieved in 1963. This year, however, the celebrations have been met with mixed emotions, particularly due to the economic challenges facing the nation.
Speaking to us from Nairobi, Journalist Jimmy Mbogoh, he noted that the celebrations included a speech from President William Ruto, who highlighted several government projects aimed at improving the country. Despite the optimism, Mbogoh pointed out that many Kenyans are disillusioned by the high cost of living and unemployment rates. The President acknowledged these concerns, urging citizens to unite in pushing for progress.
Mbogoh also mentioned that Gambian President Adama Barrow was the guest of honour at today’s celebrations, reflecting on the importance of unity across Africa. While the government continues to assert that inflation is under control, many ordinary citizens feel disconnected from this narrative, with many unable to afford the usual festive activities.
In Nairobi, the mood remains subdued, with many Kenyans choosing to stay in the city due to financial constraints. As the nation heads into the festive season, the pressing economic concerns remain a significant challenge.
