First boat arrives at Goma port after days of disruption in DRC

Date: Feb 19, 2025

After several days of disruption, the waters of Lake Kivu came alive once again with the arrival of the first boat, the Englebert, carrying more than 200 passengers at the public Port Bisengimana in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The long-awaited resumption of lake activities follows a directive from the Provincial Governor, who issued a press release authorising the reopening of transport routes between Goma and Bukavu.

The Englebert’s arrival has been warmly welcomed by the residents of Goma, many of whom have faced challenges in the wake of the recent instability in the region. The boat also brought a vital supply of food to Goma, a much-needed shipment following the recent capture of Bukavu by M23 forces.

The food delivery is expected to ease some of the pressures faced by the city’s population, providing relief after a tense few days.

This marks a significant step toward restoring stability and normalcy in Goma, which has been grappling with the broader regional tensions. The resumption of lake transport holds great promise for continued connectivity and essential trade between the cities of Goma and Bukavu.
