South Africa's (SA) ruling party, African National Congress (ANC) first Deputy Secretary-General, Nomvula Mokonyane has urged the people of Mozambique to resolve their differences peacefully.

This follows elections in that country where the opposition has disputed the results.

The presidential candidate, Vanencio Mondlane, has called for widespread protests saying the ruling party rigged the elections.

Mokonyane, speaking to the SA Broadcasting Corporation on the sidelines of the ANC Subcommittee on International Relations two-day meeting in Ekurhuleni on Gauteng’s East Rand, says the will of the people must be respected.

“The will of the people in Mozambique has to be respected as it has been respected in Botswana, as it should be respected in few days to come in the United States of America. We must call on the people of Mozambique and urge them to resolve their issues, not actually by going to the streets but strengthening and improving the institutions of democracy.”

Botswana election

The ANC’s first Deputy Secretary General, Nomvula Mokonyane says the party welcomes the outcome of the general election in Botswana. The one-time liberation party in that country, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) lost power after 58 years of leading the country.

In SA, the ANC also lost its outright majority in the general elections this year.

“Our view is that we need to appreciate the outcome and the peaceful processes that led to the announcement by the Chief Justice of the new President-elect of Botswana. It is something that we need to reflect on. Very soon we will have a meeting of liberation movements. This is one of the items that will be considered. This was not even expected by the BDP.  Just as we didn’t expect the 40%,” explains Mokonyane.
