AU renews call for justice, reparations

Date: May 25, 2025

The African Union (AU) has marked this year’s Africa Day with a powerful appeal for unity, justice, and a shared commitment to progress.

The continental body placed the spotlight on historical redress, calling for reparations for Africans and people of African descent affected by slavery and colonialism.

Speaking on behalf of the AU Commission (AUC), Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf delivered a moving address that honoured the resilience of the continent while urging bold action toward a more equitable future.

“This year’s theme, ‘Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,’ is not only about remembering the past,” said Youssouf, “it is about reclaiming dignity and demanding what is long overdue.”

He acknowledged the deep scars left by centuries of exploitation but emphasised that Africa refuses to be defined by its trauma. “Africa will not be held hostage by the pain of its past,” he declared, reaffirming the AU’s commitment to justice and meaningful restoration.

Africa Day commemorates the formation of the Organisation of African Unity on May 25, 1963, a turning point in the fight for political liberation. Now under the banner of the AU, the day continues to symbolise the enduring struggle for unity, sovereignty, and socio-economic transformation.
