Embracing palliative care, APCC advocates for accessibility, community education

Date: Oct 12, 2024

As the world marks World Hospice and Palliative Care Day, the Association for Palliative Care Centres (APCC) in South Africa is championing a vital message: palliative care should not be feared but embraced to enhance patient health.

This year's theme, "Ten Years Since the Resolution: How are we doing?" prompts a reflection on the progress made in palliative care since the global resolution.

Lawrence Madikiana, a representative from APCC, emphasises the importance of making palliative care accessible to all, stating that it should be a standard part of healthcare services.

He highlights the need for psychological, social, spiritual, and physical support systems, which are integral components of palliative care. Madikiana urges healthcare facilities to provide information on accessing these services and calls for support of palliative care centres nationwide.

The APCC's stance comes at a time when the global health community is observing the impact of palliative care education in communities.

By integrating palliative care into community settings, the APCC believes patient health outcomes can significantly improve, underscoring the importance of public awareness and education on the subject.
