UNICEF, SA government intensify efforts against child food contamination

Date: Nov 22, 2024

In a concerted effort to combat food contamination affecting children, UNICEF South Africa (SA) has announced an enhancement of its collaborative efforts with the national government.

This initiative comes in response to alarming findings in the agency's recent Situation Analysis report, which was unveiled in conjunction with World Children's Day.

The report highlights a troubling reality, revealing that 62% of the nation's children are suffering from multi-dimensional poverty, a condition that severely hampers access to nutritious, uncontaminated food.

Christine Muhigana of UNICEF articulated the urgency of addressing the root causes of this crisis.

"The barriers preventing a caregiver or parent from providing the necessary nutritious food are often rooted in poverty," she explained.

"To make a real difference in the lives of these children, we must tackle the broader livelihood issues that are prevalent in our society."

The strengthened partnership aims to ensure that every child in SA can enjoy the fundamental right to safe and healthy sustenance.
