SA Supreme Court of Appeal rejects former fugitive Doctor's deportation appeal

Date: May 16, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein has dismissed Dr Nandipha Magudumana’s appeal against her deportation, dealing another blow to her legal efforts.

Earlier, the Free State province High Court also ruled against her attempt to overturn her arrest and deportation from Tanzania in 2023.

Magudumana is among those facing charges related to the prison escape of convicted murderer and serial rapist Thabo Bester. The appeal ruling paves the way for the trial, which is set to start in July.

Alongside Magudumana, the accused include Bester himself, her father, and former staff from the G4S-operated Mangaung Correctional Centre. They face 38 charges, ranging from fraud and corruption to money laundering, aiding an inmate’s escape, desecration of a corpse, and obstructing justice.

The case has attracted widespread attention due to the gravity of the allegations and the involvement of several individuals connected to the prison break.
