Nigerian President to attend BRICS Summit, despite not being bloc member

Date: Jun 29, 2025

Nigeria's President, Bola Tinubu has departed for the 17th BRICS Summit in Brazil. But before arriving in Brazil, he will visit Saint Lucia, in North America as part of his country's commitment to deepening engagements with nations in the Caribbean

Nigerian Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga said while in Saint Lucia, Tinubu will engage with the Governor-General, and Prime Minister and address a joint session of the Senate and House of Assembly.

Also expected in attendance will be Heads of Government of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States, members of the diplomatic corps, and members of the Nigerian community in the country.

Thereafter, he will proceed to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, to participate in the 17th BRICS Summit from July 6 to July 7. It is an annual conference where leaders from BRICS member countries such as Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa converge to deliberate on global issues and policies. Though not a guest member of BRICS, Presidential sources say the Nigerian leader has been invited by Brazil's President, Luiz Lula da Silva.

The summit is expected to focus on partnerships between BRICS nations, and cooperation with countries in the Global South, a term globally used in the categorisation of countries with less industrial economies.
