SA assumed the G20 presidency in December 2024, taking over from Brazil. The Department of International Relations and Co-operation (DIRCO) says Lamola will provide an update on the country’s progress so far and preparations for the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for November 2025.
According to a departmental statement, Lamola’s briefing will also address the broader context in which SA is leading the G20, including ongoing global economic difficulties and geopolitical tensions.
SA’s presidency comes amid rising global challenges, such as trade tensions between the United States (US) and several countries, including SA.
The imposition of tariffs by the US has led Pretoria to expand and diversify its trade relationships with other nations.
