His remarks come amid growing tensions between the DA and the African National Congress (ANC) following the removal of the DA’s Andrew Whitfield from his role as Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition.
In response to Whitfield’s dismissal, the DA announced it would withhold support for budgets led by ANC ministers they regard as corrupt. However, Shilowa believes other political parties are prepared to cooperate with the ANC should the DA exit the GNU.
He said, "Even if the DA were to say we are out of here, or the ANC were to say let them go, or whatever the circumstances, there will still be a GNU. The rest of the parties are likely to stay, and there are a number of smaller parties that may come on board who may not necessarily be comfortable with the DA there. So, I think it will survive."
