SANDF refutes reports of weapons surrender in DRC withdrawal

Date: May 26, 2025

South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has dismissed a news report claiming that SANDF members withdrawing from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are required to surrender their weapons while transiting through Rwanda.

It says the article must be condemned in the strongest possible terms as nothing but hearsay.

In a statement, the SANDF says this article is not factual and appears to be aimed at creating panic and discrediting all involved.

It also says this reporting compromises the safety of the troops.

“The author of this story did not verify the facts with the authorities to confirm the veracity of the misplaced assertion that members will be disarmed whilst en-route to Tanzania through the territory of Rwanda. SANDF troops are withdrawing from the DRC after an agreement was reached by SADC and the East African Community to allow peace processes to resume,” reads the statement in part.
