Filmmakers behind ‘Blood Parliament’ documentary arrested in Kenya

Date: May 5, 2025

Kenya’s Civic Freedoms Forum has raised alarm over the arrest of four filmmakers connected to the explosive BBC documentary Blood Parliament, calling the incident deeply concerning and demanding answers from authorities.

Those detained include Nicholas Gichuki, Brian Adagala, Mark Denver Karibui, and Chris Wamae, part of the production team that worked on the film, which has stirred political controversy since its recent airing in Kenya.

According to a statement from the Forum, the four were picked up from their studio under unclear circumstances, sparking fears of a clampdown on press and creative freedoms.

“We are shocked by the arrest of these individuals,” the Forum said. “Their detention raises serious questions about freedom of expression and the extent to which critical voices are being silenced.”

Blood Parliament investigates allegations of corruption and misconduct within the Kenyan legislature. While it has drawn praise for its investigative depth, it has also triggered sharp criticism from some political quarters who accuse the film of bias and sensationalism.

So far, Kenyan authorities have not publicly confirmed the reasons for the arrests or commented on the documentary’s claims. The Civic Freedoms Forum is calling for the immediate release of the filmmakers and for transparency regarding the circumstances of their detention.

“The ability to question power and expose wrongdoing lies at the heart of any democratic society,” the Forum added.

The incident has reignited concerns over press freedom in Kenya, with media watchdogs and civil society groups warning of growing pressure on journalists and filmmakers who tackle politically sensitive issues.
