In a report published on Wednesday, the organisation says it found that security forces used reckless and unnecessary force on protestors resulting in the deaths of over 300 people and injuring thousands.
In the October 21, 2024, protests erupted across the country after opposition parties and many citizens rejected the election results claiming that the incumbent Mozambique Liberation Front, commonly known as FRELIMO and its candidate, Daniel Chapo, had rigged the votes.
Researcher at AI Nicky Frederick says research found that people’s rights were violated.
"Our research found that instead of protecting the right to peaceful assembly, the Mozambican police crackdown on the nationwide protests then responded with unlawful use of force, mass arbitrary arrests and suppression of information.
For instance, the police unlawfully used firearms, a less lethal weapon such as teargas and what is commonly known as rubber bullets and they were killing and injuring protestors and bystanders, including children."
