Kenya government is failing GBV victims: Reporter

Date: Sep 9, 2024

With women killed at alarming rates in Kenya, there are still not enough measures put in place by the Kenyan government to protects society, Dennis Beru; Chairperson and Founder of Association of Grassroots Journalists said today.

In recent months, human rights activists took to the streets of Capital Nairobi, staging demonstrations against Gender-based violence (GBV). It is reported that many domestic violence cases take years to resolve, and others disappear without being investigated and some go unreported.

The death of Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who was training and living in the country has sent shock waves across the country and the continent.

On one hand, Beru says confirms that there is indeed an increasing number of women being killed and suspects are always arrested, however, nothing happens after.

“We don't get clear information about how and why we are losing these women especially athletes and why we the government is struggling to put measures in place to protects society,” said Beru.

On the other hand, government Spokesperson Isaac Mwwaura says they government has improved in solving GBV cases.  He confirms that the conditions of women in Kenya have improved.

“The sporadic cases of femicide and violence cannot deter the march towards ensuring that there's equality between men and women in Kenya,” said  Mwwaura.

He further denies allegations of government failing society in resolving GBV cases.

“Anyone who is found culpable will be arraigned in court and will, of course, be sentenced. People are being prosecuted, they are being incarcerated and that will continue going forward," said Mwaaura.
