SA Presidency Minister defends expanded cabinet

Date: Jul 4, 2024

South Africa's (SA) Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni has addressed concerns over the increased size of South Africa's new national executive.

The expansion, which has faced criticism for perceived bloating, was deemed necessary following the latest election results and the subsequent formation of a Government of National Unity.

Minister Ntshavheni emphasised the importance of inclusivity in the decision-making process, citing the country's diverse demographics, geographic distribution, and the need for balanced youth and gender representation as key considerations.

"Due to the electoral outcome and the consensus on establishing a government of national unity, the president's prior commitment to reduce the number of portfolios within the National Executive could not be realized," stated Ntshavheni.

She further clarified that the current size of the national executive is a reflection of the need to accommodate the varied interests and voices within SA, countering the narrative of an unnecessarily expanded government structure.
