SA witness protection programme under spotlight

Date: Apr 11, 2025

The witness protection programme in South Africa (SA) has come under the spotlight following the killing of the key whistle-blower in the rape and human trafficking case of a prominent televangelist.

Pamela Mabini, a community activist and whistleblower was shot and killed outside her home in, Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape, in Mach.

Timothy Omotoso, a Nigerian televangelist, was acquitted of rape and human trafficking charges.

Speaking at a media briefing in Braamfontein, Johannesburg about the case, Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Chairperson Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva says Mabini's whistleblowing played an instrumental role in the arrest of Omotoso and others.

“As the Pastor Omotoso case unfolded, witnesses soon attracted unwelcome attention, placing them in harmful way and that escalated rendering to vulnerabilities and posing a threat to their lives.
