SA MK Party distances itself from Shivambu's visit to Malawi pastor

Date: Apr 20, 2025

The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party in South Africa (SA) says its Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu visited self-proclaimed prophet Shepherd Bushiri in Malawi in his personal capacity.

MK Party says the trip was not sanctioned by the party.

Bushiri is facing a range of charges and has been declared a fugitive by SA law enforcement agencies. He fled the country to Malawi in November 2020 after he and his wife were granted bail.

Last month, a Malawian court ruled that Bushiri can be extradited to SA to face justice.

The MK Party, led by former President Jacob Zuma, says it had no knowledge of Shivambu’s visit.

“The MK Party wishes to place it on record that the trip undertaken by Mr Shivambu was not discussed or approved by the party’s leadership. We distance ourselves from this visit and reaffirm our respect for the rule of law,” the party said in a statement.
