The revelation was made by the country’s Auditor General. Answering oral questions in Parliament, SA’s Deputy President, Paul Mashatile explained a planned strategy to fix the local sphere of government.
“The deteriorating levels of municipality performance has emerged as the emance constrained to growth and investment, and as a results several municipalities are affected by weak or unstable governance, poor revenue collection and funding shortfalls. To address these challenges, in September 2024 the cabinet resolved to establish an intraministerial committee on municipal performance tarn around plan chaired by the minister of the country’s Department of Co-Operative Governance & Traditional Affairs,” Mashatile said.
Mashatile says a ministerial committee has been established.
“It will further prioritise interventions focusing on ten municipalities deemed most distressed by the presidency. This includes Enock Mgijima, Maluti Pafuheng, Mafuphe Kopanong, Emfuleni, Umzinyathi, Tabazimbi, Tembelihle, Kitsoba and Mamosa local municipalities,” Mashatile said.
