SA Presidency clarifies why special envoy missed US delegation

Date: May 22, 2025

The South African (SA) Presidency has explained why special envoy Mcebisi Jonas was not part of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s delegation to the United States (US).

According to the Presidency, Jonas himself requested not to be included in the trip.

Despite not travelling, Jonas contributed to the preparatory work ahead of the US meeting, the statement added. The Presidency also confirmed that Jonas possesses valid travel documents for the US.

There had been speculation that Jonas was left out because of his critical comments about the US President, but the Presidency denied any connection between his views and his absence from the delegation.

This clarification comes amid questions about the makeup of the SA delegation and aims to set the record straight.
