SA hospital forced to discharge 21 botched circumcision initiates

Date: Jul 13, 2025

The Traditional Affairs department in South Africa’s (SA) Limpopo province says capacity challenges have forced the George Masebe hospital to discharge 21 initiates admitted for botched circumcisions

The initiates were from the Lesodi and Rantlakana initiation schools. Department Spokesperson, Amos Phago says that five of the initiates were re-circumcised at the hospital, while 16 others will be taken from the initiation school to Mokopane hospital on Monday.

“Only five initiates were attended to and released on the July 11, for the one day procedure due to capacity challenges at George Masebe hospital. The remaining 16 initiates were returned to the respective initiation schools and will be taken to Mokopane hospital on Monday. Government will be visiting the affected schools early next week for the first hand account of what transpired,” Phago said.
