Poor economy made it difficult to earn a living: SA Artists

Date: Jan 1, 2025

Artists who are part of the Summer beach festival in Durban, South Africa, say the poor economy in 2024 made it difficult for them to earn a living.

Comedian Mondli Mzizi and actors, Jet Novula and Kimi Shandu were part of a boat cruise from the Durban port the celebrate New Year’s Eve.

They say they are heavily dependent on the support from the community and shows or festivals.

However, due to the poor economy people have not been spending money on entertainment.

The artists say the government should organise workshops in the new year to empower artists with skills so that they can find ways to support themselves in difficult times.

“The challenge is that people don’t spend money on entertainment due to the bad economic situation and instead they hire local MC instead of professionals MC, so that they can save. So, digital is the way forward.”

“This is a very unfortunate situation because creative arts are the blueprint of the economy. I think government in 2025, must assist in terms of equipping people with necessary skills in the industry, so that they can understand the importance of money and money management is important.”
