SA Government to spend 40% of $200 million budget on MP benefits

Date: Jul 16, 2025

South Africa’s (SA) National Assembly Speaker, Thoko Didiza says she wants to engage National Treasury about the benefits of Members of Parliament (MPs)

Didiza says the cost of MP benefits takes up almost half the budget of Parliament. She was speaking during the tabling of Parliament's budget vote, where the country’s Parliament has been allocated $200 million.

“Over 42% of our budget goes towards members' benefits such as remuneration, entitlements, medical aid for current and former members of parliament, as well as provincial legislatures. I must say this is a matter we will like to engage national treasury on because it does put a burden on the budget of the parliament,” Didiza said.
