US expulsion of SA Ambassador a radical move: Expert

Date: Mar 17, 2025

Honorary Professor of International Relations at Wits University, John Stremlau, has described the United States' (US) decision to expel South Africa's (SA) Ambassador, Ebrahim Rasool, as "radical."

The move, which will see Rasool officially stripped of his recognition, privileges, and immunities, has raised questions about the state of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

Reflecting on the rarity of such actions, Stremlau compared it to the Carter administration's response to the Iranian hostage crisis.

"Trump is unlike any other President of the US," Stremlau noted, highlighting the stark contrasts in the Trump administration's policies, including welcoming Afrikaner refugees while deporting Venezuelans.

The expulsion follows comments made by Rasool during a webinar, reportedly critical of the Trump administration. In response, SA's Presidency has expressed its commitment to repairing ties with the US. Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya announced plans to send a delegation to Washington with a proposal for a mutually beneficial trade deal. "We are focused on restoring the relationship," Magwenya stated.
