SAMWU calls on SA municipality to drop charges against striking officers

Date: May 6, 2025

The South African Municipal Workers' Union (SAMWU) is urging the City of Ekurhuleni in Gauteng to abandon disciplinary action against nearly 400 metro police officers who took part in an unprotected strike earlier this year.

The officers downed tools in March over disputes involving salary adjustments and overtime pay. In response, the city has issued pre-dismissal notices to 389 officers, citing misconduct.

SAMWU, however, believes that taking disciplinary steps at this stage will only worsen the situation. According to the union’s Ekurhuleni Chairperson, Chris Mavunda, discussions with the city had already begun through established channels.

“We don’t believe the municipality’s actions are necessary right now,” said Mavunda. “As far as we understand, a process was already in place through the Local Labour Forum to address the issues. We’re confident those talks can still lead to a solution that benefits everyone.”

He added that SAMWU had formally reached out to the city, asking for a meeting to help resolve the matter amicably.

So far, the City of Ekurhuleni has not publicly responded to the union’s request.
