Mananga border post becomes temporary route for SA Mozambique-bound travellers amid unrest

Date: Dec 10, 2024

In light of the recent post-election violence in Mozambique, South African (SA) travellers heading to the country have been advised to reroute via the Mananga Border Post in Eswatini.

The Lebombo port of entry, a key transit point in Mpumalanga between SA and Mozambique, has temporarily ceased operations.

This suspension comes as a direct response to the sporadic protests on the Mozambican side, leaving cargo and travellers stranded at the Lebombo border.

Jane Thupana, Deputy Commissioner of SA's Border Management Authority, has recommended that pedestrians and small vehicles use the Mananga Border Post as an alternative.

She emphasised that this is a provisional measure while discussions with Mozambican authorities are ongoing. However, cargo trucks are currently unable to pass through Mananga due to similar protests targeting commercial goods at Boane, Mozambique. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are seeking a resolution to facilitate the safe and efficient passage of goods and individuals.
