SA’s Public Works department takes legal action to evict former MPs

Date: Apr 6, 2025

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure in South Africa (SA) has confirmed it is taking legal steps to evict former Members of Parliament (MPs) who have refused to vacate their subsidised accommodation.

The individuals involved include three former MPs from the uMkhonto weSizwe Party and one from the African National Congress.

The matter has drawn considerable attention, with these former MPs resisting eviction despite no longer being eligible to occupy the parliamentary villages, as they are not serving in the current Parliament. Lennox Mabaso, Spokesperson for the Department, provided clarification on the situation.

“We can confirm that there are former MPs who have been resisting moving out, even though they no longer qualify to stay in the villages because they are no longer serving in Parliament. We have notified their respective political parties and engaged with them. The political parties have advised that the Department should proceed with the legal steps it is currently taking to evict these former MPs,” Mabaso said.

The Department has made it clear that they are following the legal procedure to resolve the issue, ensuring that the accommodation is available for eligible individuals in line with the guidelines governing the use of parliamentary housing.
