Gwarube delivered her message as the keynote speaker at the 150th anniversary of Kingsridge High School for Girls in Qonce, Eastern Cape province, her alma mater, coinciding with International Women’s Day.
In her address, Gwarube stressed the importance of young women engaging in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, highlighting that they are more than capable of leading in these areas. She expressed optimism over the progress made in the last 30 years in encouraging young learners, particularly women, to pursue these subjects.
"Over the past 30 years, we’ve made great strides in creating equal opportunities for young learners, particularly in getting them to take up STEM subjects. We can already see these efforts reflected in various industries, but there is still work to be done," said Gwarube.
She also called for increased focus on supporting young women, especially in rural areas, and ensuring they are prepared from the foundation phase of education to pursue these subjects with confidence and ease.
"Supporting young women isn’t just about curricular activities, but ensuring a strong foundation early on, so it’s less difficult for them to take on challenging subjects in the future," she added.
