Rwanda government may introduce a tax on church collections

Date: Aug 19, 2024

Rwanda’s government may introduce a tax on the church collections in a bid to address what President Paul Kagame describes as extortion and exploitations by some evangelical leaders.

Kagame has expressed strong criticism against church leaders who misuse religion to manipulate and extract money from followers.  Rwandan authorities said they had closed about 8 000 churches for operating illegally and not fulfilling infrastructure requirements.

A Reporter form Rwanda, Sylivanus Karemer said they’ve had the ongoing process of closure of different churches in Rwanda, especially those churches from Pentecostal and there hasn't been a law or the directive and regulation. However, Kagame sounded very critical and very furious about this issue of churches.

Karemer also says there is a mixed reaction from people regarding this matter. Some people with what is happening, and others complain. That they might jeopardised by what is happening.

It’s not just Rwanda that has struggles with regulating Preachers. Uganda announced last week that it will publish a white paper on regulating worship, after reports of extortion by clerics.
