This is where the philosophy of Ubuntu (humanity) offers something powerful, a reminder that leadership is about empathy, understanding and connection. As the demand for emotionally intelligent and people-focused leadership grows, so does the need to invest in training that helps managers build relationships, not just meet targets.
Noreen MacPherson is an Associate and Learning and Development Specialist at Maccauvlei Learning Academy, and says the principle of Ubuntu will benefit both the employer and employee as it emphasises the value of each member of the organisation.
“If you don’t care about people, they are not going to perform. It’s a cliché that happy people are productive people, but it is also a reality. In the SA environment, we need to empower our people, in order for them to be productive and for organisations to sustain a competitive advantage,” MacPherson said.
