SA rejects claims of sinister nuclear ties with Iran

Date: Mar 20, 2025

Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya has firmly denied allegations that South Africa (SA) has a secret nuclear weapons program in collaboration with Iran.

Speaking at a media briefing in Pretoria today, Magwenya emphasized that SA ceased all nuclear weapons development by 1994, when the democratic government took office.

"By the time a democratic government took over the leadership of this country in 1994, SA had ceased engaging in any form of nuclear capacity development for weapons purposes,"Magwenya stated.

He further rejected claims of a covert program with Iran, saying, "We will reject the assertion that we have a sinister programme with Iran that is designed to generate some form of nuclear weapons programme or capacity for SA. We are not involved in that."

Magwenya highlighted the historical ties between the two nations, with Iran having supported South African liberation movements.
