SA party calls on President to send GNU delegation to US to mend relations

Date: Mar 15, 2025

The South African (SA) political party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to send a delegation from the Government of National Unity (GNU) to the United States to broker peace with the Donald Trump administration.

This follows the expulsion of SA’s Ambassador to the US, Ibrahim Rasool.

Last night, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on the social media platform X that Rasool was no longer welcome in the US. He stated that Ebrahim Rasool is a race-baiting politician who hates the US and insisted that they have nothing to discuss with him.

Rasool has since been declared persona non grata and ordered to leave the country within 72 hours.

DA Spokesperson Willie Aucamp described the situation as regrettable but insisted that the President must send a delegation to help mend relations with the US.

“The DA deems the situation in the US concerning. Our Ambassador there is deeply unfortunate, and we call on the President to expedite the GNU delegation to the USA to negotiate a pathway towards the stabilisation of diplomatic relations with one of our country’s most important trade and investment partners. The DA and other partners in the GNU must also now urgently become involved in framing foreign policy. It is simply not right that the ANC has carte blanche on foreign policy and the appointment of diplomats while they are only a 39% party."
