The suspects were detained after a tip-off from neighbours led to the discovery of 26 Ethiopian nationals, who had been held captive in deplorable conditions.
The victims, mostly young men aged between 20 and 35, were found naked and confined in a large house surrounded by burglar bars and locked doors, suggesting they had been kept against their will. Some managed to escape by breaking a window and fleeing through the broken bars. The house has since been declared a crime scene, with police cordoning off the area for further investigation.
Hawks Spokesperson Colonel Philani Nkwalase, stated that the victims were likely forced into these conditions to prevent escape, and they were given clothing resembling uniforms. The operation is not the first of its kind; in August 2024, 90 Ethiopian nationals were rescued from a similar situation.
Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any individuals seen acting suspiciously or attempting to hide themselves. The investigation continues as police work to confirm the trafficking network's full scope.
