Burundians head to the polls in historic standalone legislative vote

Date: Jun 5, 2025

Voters across Burundi are heading to the polls this Thursday to elect a new parliament in the country's first legislative elections since 2020, and the first time in its history that parliamentary and presidential elections are being held separately.

This change follows constitutional amendments made in 2018, which not only altered the electoral calendar but also extended the presidential term from five to seven years. The shift has set the stage for what many see as an important political moment in the lead-up to the 2027 presidential vote.

President Évariste Ndayishimiye’s ruling party, the CNDD-FDD, remains the dominant political force, having held power for nearly 20 years. These elections are widely regarded as a key test of its continued influence and of the broader democratic process in Burundi.

While the campaign period saw limited opposition activity, all eyes are now on voter turnout and how the elections are managed. Many Burundians hope the vote will reflect growing political maturity and transparency, though concerns linger about the inclusivity and fairness of the process.

The outcome of today’s elections is expected to shape the country’s political trajectory well beyond the next two years.
